*The Solo headphone amplifier design configuration was first created as part of a post production mixer during the early 90's. Since then it has undergone numerous refinements making it now an important reference for numerous users both professional and amateur
On power supplies, another consideration is in
power supply noise - SM-PS operate at ultrasonic frequencies which can't be
heard but when placed in proximity with other sound emitting devices the two
sounds can beat to produce an audible chirping - although extremely quiet
some people are very sensitive and this can be an annoyance
The Solo SRG headphone amplifier is a solid-state hybrid op-amp/bipolar discrete transistor configuration but has none of the "transistor-sound" usually associated with solid-state |

Solo Studio Reference Green (SRG)Monitor Class Headphone Amplifier
more details at www.gspaudio.co.uk... The Solo SRG drives headphones in a completely different *way to any other headphone amplifier!Generally headphone impedances can be anything from 16 Ohms to 600 Ohms depending on make and design. They can also vary wildly in impedance over the tonal range. Also, the need for a thin, long flexible cable means headphones present a difficult capacitive load as real as that of speakers and speaker cables! You soon get the impression that headphones are very difficult to tame? But the Solo SRG tames them! It uses not one but two negative feedback networks which both control gain, but rather than doing it like conventional NFB, the second network reads what the headphone and its cable are actually doing with the signal. This corrects the wild impedance fluctuations of each headphone and different capacitive loads between one pair of headphones and another. Instead of trying to fruitlessly track down a headphone amp having synergy with your own particular pair of headphones - which means you're usually then exclusively stuck with that pair of headphones - the Solo SRG allows you to settle on one amplifier and then use any of the high performance (dynamic head-worn) headphones available! What's studio reference about it?The Solo has *always been very popular in recording studio editing suites - in fact for any type of post-production work - where it makes the engineer's job much easier, because the important editing cues contained in the recording are so easy to hear! For this important work it has become a benchmark or reference without which the engineers burden would be greatly increased. In recent years it has become the headphone amplifier of choice for a much wider range of monitoring uses. What's green about it?The Solo SRG headphone amplifier has been designed to deliver its high quality high performance and incredibly open and transparent musical sound using switched-mode power supply technology as well as our alternative linear offering: the PSU1. Therefore you have a choice of buying the energy saving Solo SRG/Green which comes complete with a universal mains voltage energy efficient plug-top SM-PS (switched mode) power supply, or our linear PSU1 power supply - choose your option below... The other thing that's green is its power LED! Which power supply? The lowest cost or entry option is the Solo SRG/Green supplied with its energy saving switched mode (SM-PS) plug-top power supply. SM-PS have more leakage than linear power supplies which means you may have to use a supplementary earth wire: because the Solo SRG case is metal some people can feel a slight vibration sensation when a hand is drawn across it - although this is approved as being safe it can cause annoyance to some. This slight case vibration can also subtly modulate the sound in some circumstances, so in a similar way to grounding a turntable, we provide the Solo SRG (now fitted on both options) with a rear-panel grounding post from which can be run an unobtrusive "earth" wire to another earthed system component, an earth spike, or the earth pin of a mains plug (CAUTION: Wiring to the wrong pin can cause electrocution! as well as considerable damage). Although the SM-PS saves over 80% of idling power making it a contributor to world energy conservation, the above experimentation will be required to get the best out of your Solo SRG/Green headphone amplifier. The alternative is to use our PSU1 powered option, which although being more expensive also offers a subtle improvement in information retrieval making it the more musical proposition in a high resolution system.
