Slight-Second Reduction

Help Recycle And Save Money On A Graham Slee Amp Stage

High street shops and online resellers sell what we term as our "perfect-finish" products. However, with hand-made or hand-finished parts, which includes all our casework, whether from our suppliers in Germany or in the UK, there are bound to be some slight imperfections.

The experienced eye is the final arbiter and our engineers reject casework beyond a certain number of imperfections - it ensures you get the feel of quality when you buy one of our products.

It also means that by the end of the year, we have a collection of what we term "slight-second" cases. Rather than committing them all to carbon energy-consuming recycling (melting them down), we thought some of our customers would be happy to receive one of our products with a slight-second reduction?

Case Style K Case Style UWhat are the reductions?

Case style K:

(case style K is used on the Solo headphone amplifier and similarly cased products - not the Novo which is style G)

Slight-second reduction: £40 excluding VAT; £46.00 including 15% VAT

Case style U:

(case style U is used on the Gram Amp 3 Fanfare and similarly cased products)

£25 excluding VAT; £28.75 including 15% VAT

What are the slight imperfections?

Perfects (examples)

Imperfections in Metal

Some surface imperfections are allowed such as this hardly noticeable smear

Imperfections in Metal

This slight corner indentation measures only 1.5mm and is not normally visible

Imperfections in Metal

A small scratch below the anodic film isn't noticeable under conventional lighting

Imperfections in Metal

Extrusions always feature "tramlines" in the direction of extrusion. This is borderline.

Imperfections in Metal

Above (borderline) and below: knife marks where anodizing electrodes attach

Imperfections in Metal

Slight-Seconds (examples)

Imperfections in Metal

This mark is caused by an impurity in the molten metal trapped in the extrusion die

Imperfections in Metal

Corner impact damage such as this is hidden behind a front panel

Imperfections in Metal

An example where de-gassing of the molten metal has been insifficient

Imperfections in Metal

This corner damage is about the worst that can be expected

Imperfections in Metal

Above: printing error; Below: a noticeable scratch in a panel

Imperfections in Metal

Generally, borderline imperfections are moved to the slight-second category. Imperfections on "Perfects" are only allowed where hardly-visible and there are very few.

A slight-second will have a number of the imperfections similar to those shown in the right hand column above.

Please note: These cases are not available to purchase separately.

IMPORTANT: Before You Buy, Consider...

Miracles?

Although our products win awards for their miraculous performance, it has to be said that they can only do miracles with a good signal source. They cannot magically improve something that isn't. If you have been led to believe they can, please think again before buying.

Running In?

High performance products, which these are, will not perform at their best until they have been powered up a number of weeks. During this "burn-in" or "pre-ageing" period they will undergo sonic changes - eventually settling to their best performance. The subject of "pre-ageing" is well documented by electronic component manufacturers but often denied by some hi-fi manufacturers.
